Appendix 9 : Narrative of Qatadah from Anas ibn Malik

Tirmidhi, No. 3346

حدثنا محمد بن بشار، حدثنا محمد بن جعفر، وابن ابي عدي، عن سعيد بن ابي عروبة، عن قتادة، عن انس بن مالك، عن مالك بن صعصعة رجل من قومه، ان النبي صلى اللّٰه عليه وسلم، قال: بينما انا عند البيت بين النائم واليقظان إذ سمعت قائلاً يقول: احد بين الثلاثة، فاتيت بطست من ذهب فيها ماء زمزم فشرح صدري إلى كذا وكذا، قال قتادة: قلت لانس بن مالك: ما يعني؟ قال: إلى اسفل بطني، فاستخرج قلبي فغسل قلبي بماء زمزم ثم اعيد مكانه ثم حشي إيمانًا وحكمةً، وفي الحديث قصة طويلة.

Narrated by Anas bin Malik (RA): He narrated from a man of his tribe, Malik bin Sa’sa’ah (RA), that the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said:

‘I was near the House of Allah (Baytullah) in a state between sleep and wakefulness (i.e., in a semi-dream state). Suddenly, I heard someone saying, ‘He is one of the three men.’ Then a golden tray was brought to me, and it contained Zamzam water. My chest was split open from here to here.’

Qatadah said, I asked Anas (RA), ‘From where to where?’ He replied, ‘The Prophet (PBUH) said: from the throat to below the stomach.’

The Prophet (PBUH) continued: ‘My heart was removed, washed with Zamzam water, and then returned to its place. It was filled with faith and wisdom.’

Anas (RA) added: ‘This narration contains a lengthy account.’
